does creativity exist within everyone?

plus a look a the top-trending artists (and what makes one of them tick)

welcome to issue #20 of moments, our bi-weekly newsletter. if you’re new here, this is the space where we share product updates, highlights from our community, and a curation of our favorite gems.

what have we been up to? we’re spending time thinking about creative rewards 👀, planning two nyc gallery shows, and launching an all new way to understand your status as an artist and collector.

in looking at all the hundreds of gems shared over the past two weeks, we noticed an interesting theme: so many of you have been working on your own interpretations of the human figure. they range from abstracted portraits to expressive paintings and surrealist imaginings – put simply, we can’t get enough.

this week’s featured creator is christine craft (@chrisdangertine). A designer and illustrator, christine’s mirrored works play with the perception of perspective and reality. our community manager sydney recently sat down with her to chat about her inspirations and belief that “everyone is creative.”

what’s your story?

i started becoming an artist as soon as i could pick up a crayon. i grew up outside in the woods and streams and was a strangely spiritual child.

i chose to attend school right outside of nashville so i could participate in the design and production of the recording and film industry. my adventure story really starts after college when i drove with friends from nashville to the pacific northwest. witnessing a sunset at the very tip of the nation was one of the most magical experiences of my life. i knew i wasn’t meant to live a settled life, i had to go, i had to do things differently.

can you tell us more about your process?

my digital art is a culmination of my illustration, photography, and editing but with a lot more thought and introspection guiding me. my art tends to flow out of my state of mind or journaling.

i take photos of things that go unnoticed like abandoned buildings, gigantic cliffs that create the caves i hike past, spray painting splatters, or blurry long exposures of city lights. then i’ll edit experimentally until i’ve created abstract subject matter. not everyone sees the creatures or faces or buildings that i think i’ve composed, but everyone has a different lens through which they are encountering art within their individual lives that is completely valid.

what do you hope people see or feel through your work?

i like to take the mundane and challenge people to see it for something that it could be. i also want my work to really make people question “the spaces in between”. that's just an overall theme, like the space in between light and dark, the space in between the here and there, between the physical and spiritual or this realm and beyond, the veil.

this week we launched leaderboards, a new way to see how your contributions to the primitives community stack up (and to reward you for your work creating and collecting).
